 Computer Refurbishment

We have four computer refurbishment programs. The youth in these programs learn all about computer hardware and learn the differences between Microsoft and Open Source software.

These programs have two main objectives beyond teaching the teens about technology. The first one is for the youth to give back to their community in the form of computer donations to a CBO in the area that has limited access to technology. The second is to make sure the donated computers are used and understood by the CBOs.

  Morton East

Morton East High School in Cicero, IL is where YTC began. YTC volunteers have been running programs after school at Morton since 1998. The Morton East location is considered our base and we affectionately refer to it as the Cyber Service.

Starting in 1999, the youth of the Morton East Cyber Service have donated computer labs to the Cicero Boys and Girls Club, the Cicero Youth Commission, The Berwyn Youth Commission, Ebenezer Church in Berwyn, The Neighborhood Center in Cicero and three Children's Centers. This group has given more than 100 computers to their community.

Phillips

Our program at Wendell Phillips Academy High School has been running since the fall of 2003.

The youth in this program have donated computers to the Wells Elementary School, the ROTC of Wendell Phillips, and the Center for New Horizons. The Phillips program is one of our four programs funded by After School Matters and is now considered an Advanced Apprenticeship. The Phillips program has 15 apprentices, many of whom have been in the program multiple semesters and who now know a great deal about computers.

  Austin

Our program at the Austin Community Academy High School has been running since the fall of 2003. The youth in this program have donated computers to the Alumni Group Of Austin, Douglass Elementary School as well as the Austin Town Hall.

  Hyde Park

Our Hyde Park program started in the Fall of 2005, when a teacher from the school, John Kugler, approached us and asked if he could start a chapter at his own school. John has been volunteering his time and teaches teens about computers.
